Bark Collar to Stop Dog barking? - An Inhuman Approach
Bark control collars that are used to curb dog nuisance barking come in a variety of forms: shock collars that deliver a static electric pulse, spray collars that spray citronella which dogs dislike and ultrasonic collars that deliver a loud noise only the dog can hear. These collars pick up vibration or voice from dog's barking and respond accordingly Your dog associates the pain or discomfort induced by the collar with his barking and exhibits a conditioned response of avoiding this behavior. It is called Operant conditioning, the term used by the famous psychologist B.F.Skinner, to describe the effects of consequences to modify the future occurrences of that behavior. Here, the punishment in the form of shock is a consequence that causes the barking behavior to occur with less frequency
Now let's view this from dog's emotional health in a long-term:
Once your dog links the pain to his barking, he may be traumatized to the extent to even bark under normal circumstances where just about any dog will give voice: when he is hungry, something is wrong near the house, playtime and so on. These are natural doggy instincts and should not be curbed in any event.
This aversion training has long-term psychological ramification resulting in aggression, stress and persistent anxiety. In effect you are trading off one unwanted behavior with bunch of others.
The advanced refined collars come with shock intensity control and one can argue that it is not harmful depending on how long or how often it is used and you can always adjust the shock level to a minimum to cause any discomfort. But the dog may not differentiate the frequency or the duration of the treatment; he knows he will get zapped whenever he starts barking, period.
I recommend only under certain situations where the stress of this aversion is worth saving your dog's life and as a last resort for a stubborn dog. I have seen Cesar Millan, the prominent dog whisperer in one of his shows advocating the use of remote shock collar to divert the attention of a dog chasing the tire of running cars to avoid getting killed.
If any unwanted behavior can be corrected by positive reinforcement methods with least amount of pain or distress to the dog, any action beyond that to cause agony is unwarranted.
Often, incessant dog barking is due to behavioral issues or situations and surroundings contributing to that. Correcting the underlying problem is necessary to curb this undesirable behavior.
