Most dogs have a natural desire to chew. It’s fun, self-rewarding if they chew on something that tastes good and passes time. .
The needs to chew are more pronounced during puppy (under one year) when they are teething and adolescent stage (under three years)
Dogs also chew for various other reasons: To an anxious dog, the repetitive act of chewing is soothing. For an under exercised dog, it is a way of burning his nervous energy. For some, it is out of sheer boredom. If a puppy is teething, she needs something to work her gums on.
How to prevent the destructive act of chewing?
First Dog proof your home. Easy targets in the home include books, clothing, shoes. They also like to chew wood like chair or table leg and pillow. The more times she manages to snatch a jawful of a forbidden substance, the more readily she’ll target those items in future. Hence removing these items out of their reach will wean them eventually.
Provide tasty alternatives like rawhide bone, chewtreats and toys with treat inside like Kong to divert her attention away from household items.
Rotate the available toys every few days, to keep things new and interesting to her.
Leave her in a secluded dog-proof area part of the day just with her own toys to chew on, so that she starts to learn what and what not to chew.
If due to teething in a puppy, provide appropriate toys and chewy treats to relieve the teething pain.
Spend time in active supervision to let her understand what’s appropriate and what’s not.When you catch her chewing something inappropriate, interrupt her by making a loud noise. Then, immediately give her a raw hide bone or chew toy and praise her lavishly. It is a way of making her understand that chewing her own toys equals praise from you and everything else is a big 'No'.
Exercise her more to channelize the nervous and agitated energy due to boredom. Most dogs function best with one and a half hours’ exercise every day.
